Disease or dis-ease is caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites. But sometimes internal genetic mutation of cells can occur to cause disease. The main job of diseases is to multiply which spreads the disease throughout the body. As the cold/flu season descends upon us, you may want to consider arming your immune system. Eating foods that fight disease is one way to get started.

One of the most well-known natural remedy anti-inflammatories is ginger. Ginger has been around centuries and used to treat various conditions. Ginger is not only an anti-inflammatory but has been used to relieve nausea and vomiting. Aside from treating morning sickness ginger improves circulation and boosts the immune system. I drink ginger root tea, boil a two-inch piece of ginger root in water for 20 minutes. Drink the tea several times throughout the day to relieve chest and nasal congestion. Add honey and lemon to taste. If you are taking any medication, consult with your pharmacist for possible interactions.

Blueberries are full of antioxidants; they are also a powerhouse of nutrition. They have vitamins, C, and K, and are a great source of magnesium and fiber. Blueberries, blue or purple in color are native to North America. Because they are abundant with antioxidants that protect the cells from damage. Cellular damage causes chronic heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. Top your oatmeal of favorite cereal with blueberries, eat a handful on the go, or Add blueberries to a smoothie.

Garlic has been used as a medicinal herb for ages, it is a member of the Allium family. The active ingredient in garlic, allicin, is responsible for the way it smells. Allicin has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, making it effective for multiple conditions. Allicin is released when the garlic is crushed or chopped. When cooking with garlic it should be first because prolonged heat destroys allicin and its medicinal properties.

Kale is related to the cabbage, collards, and Brussels Sprouts family. It is high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and a great source of vitamins A, C, and K. It also contains kaempferol and quercetin, phytonutrients that fight cancer. Eat kale raw or cooked. Use it in salads, smoothies, soups, or sauté in a little olive oil. Kale is a good source of fiber, calcium, and iron. These nutrients promote bone health, immunity, and healthy cholesterol levels.

Salmon is fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, beneficial to the heart and brain. Our bodies don’t produce omega-3 fatty acids, so we need to consume foods that contain them. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation, lower cholesterol levels, and prevent blood clots. Salmon can be eaten cooked or raw.

Turmeric is bright yellow in color and has a distinctive flavor and has powerful health benefits. Turmeric contains the compound Curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory properties. It is beneficial for people with Crohn’s disease or arthritis. Curcumin also boosts the immune system and fights infections. Turmeric enhances the flavor of soups, stews, or curries. It can also be used in sweet and savory dishes.
