grapes and cheese on white plate

As we age, our skin, the largest organ in our bodies starts to lose its firmness, glow, and elasticity. Multiple products claim to combat this, many of which contain collagen, the almighty-firming agent. One of these Vitamin E skin care creams claims to contain Vitamin E, aloe vera, wheat germ, sunflower seed oil, collagen, and elastin, all good for your skin. However, after reading the ingredient list, it contained things I could not pronounce and small amounts of the ingredients I mentioned.

We spend so much money on products to help our skin look youthful and glowing, but what you eat has a significant effect on the appearance of your skin. Water is important to keep skin hydrated, drinking a lot of water improves skin hydration. Adding cucumbers, a water-rich vegetable that is 95% water will help you regain your glow. Watermelon, lettuce, and cantaloupe are also full of water.

Foods that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids will not only lower your cholesterol and fight inflammation but also preserve collagen in your skin and help keep it firmer. Examples of these foods are salmon, herring, mackerel, bluefin tuna, albacore tuna, and sardines.

If you are not a fish eater, try adding these plant-based choices that will boost collagen. Ground flaxseeds can be added to smoothies, oatmeal, or yogurt. Add chia seeds to smoothies and granola. Throw a bag of walnuts or almonds in your purse or pocket for a healthy snack. When cooking use canola or soybean oils.

Combat wrinkles with tomatoes, they contain lycopene, an antioxidant that keeps skin smoother. Make a sauce, add it to sandwiches, and salads, or use it as a side dish.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps prevent cell damage. Almonds and sunflower seeds are a good source of Vitamin E. They both make a healthy snack or can be added to baked goods and salads.

Polyphenols, a powerful antioxidant are found in green tea and coffee. The seeds, skin, and juice of grapes are another source of polyphenols. Dark chocolate contains antioxidants and vitamins, as well as flavanols, a type of polyphenols. They protect against sun damage and reduce the roughness of your skin. Treat yourself to a few ounces of dark chocolate that is 60-70% cocoa daily for better looking skin.

Avocados, are rich in monounsaturated fat, a healthy fat, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C. They all are important to maintaining strong tissues and preventing skin dryness. Add them to salads, and omelets, or make avocado toast.

Adding these foods to your diet, cutting back on alcohol consumption, and staying hydrated will lead to firmer, healthier, and glowing skin. After all, you are what you eat, and it shows!

Until next time,

Peace, Love, and Blessings❤️
