Hello to you all. this was scheduled to post 4/10/23, however it missed post. I arrived home earlier today but just checked the post. I thank you all who left messages about my trip to Dallas, it was beautiful.
I posted a photo of my garden with comment ” I have so much work to do “. Everyone does not have available space for a garden, however, planting in containers is a great alternative.
I am excited as planting season is around the corner, I will be able to grow a garden this year. As many of you know, I suffered a fractured left ankle last June and was unable to plant my annual garden.
Today, I will share with you what foods you can start with scraps and how to do so. They can all be grown in planters and containers.
Green onions are super easy to grow. I grow them in my kitchen in a deep bowl that was broken. To start cut off the bulbs and plant them so the top of the stalk pokes out of the dirt. Green onions grow rapidly, I cut off the tops as I need them, they will continue to grow.
I grow kale every year, I suggest starting in a large container as it spreads quickly. When your kale plants mature, clip off the leaves as you need it. Start with the larger leaves at the bottom of the plant.
Leeks are very easy to start, save the bulbs with at least an inch or two of the stalk. Plant the bulbs in a large container with the stalk peeking out.
I use a lot of fresh basil when cooking. Cut the stem of basil,be sure a few of the leaves are attached. Place the stems in a jar of water to start roots. Plant in a planter or container.
I always have fresh garlic in my kitchen, I purchase it by the sleeve which contains 4 to 5 large bulbs. To grow bury garlic bulbs under an inch of soil and keep watered. When the garlic starts to turn yellow it’s ready to harvest.
I don’t purchase a large bag of potatoes as I live alone. To grow potatoes cut one that is sprouting so each chunk has an eye and a sprouting. Plant with the eye facing up and cover it with a few inches of dirt.
My choice for lettuce is Romaine because it is versatile. To start a plant, cut off the end of a head of Romaine, plant it in soil, water, and it will start to regrow leaves.
To grow onions simply save the bottom piece that has the roots. Plant in soil, and water as needed. One piece of onion can be used to regrow two or more onions.
When it comes to sweet potatoes, it’s my fave. Growing sweet potatoes are different than regular potatoes. To grow sweet potatoes plant the sprouts in moist soul.
I use ginger nearly every day. Plant a piece of ginger root in a pot with soil, water, and wait for it to sprout.
Mint spreads rapidly on its own and is easy to grow. Regrow mint with cuttings just like basil.
Grow rosemary by cutting a 3 inch piece from a mature plant. Strip the leaves from the bottom half of the cutting and plant the end in soil.
Cilantro can be grown from cuttings just like basil. When the plant is mature, cut the leaves as you need them.
If you wish to grow celery save the base and place it in a cup of water. When the leaves sprout transfer the plant in a pot with soil.
To grow Bok Choy use the same method as Romaine lettuce.
The cost of food is astronomical these days, save a few pennies and grow some herbs and veggies. As noted the process is easy and even better you know there are no additives.
One last thing , start your herbs and veggies using organic produce. Don’t be scared, lol, get started!
Until next time,
Peace, Love, and Blessings ❤️🩹
