I enjoy a good juicy orange; it’s one of my favorite fruits. The peak season for oranges is between mid-December and April; after that, we orange lovers have to turn to orange juice or canned orange slices. However, like other fresh fruits, oranges can be frozen. There are various ways to freeze oranges, I will share some of those with you today.
What is the benefit of freezing oranges? Freezing oranges during their peak season lets us enjoy them year-round. Freezing also stops the ripening process and prevents the loss of valuable water-soluble vitamins, such as Vitamin C. My favorite reason is that I have access to fresh oranges for recipes that call for fresh orange juice, zest, or orange segments.
Freezing oranges converts the water content to ice, which stops the growth of microorganisms and enzymes that cause spoilage. However, the high water content and juice in oranges make them more prone to freezer burn and changes in texture when thawed. To resolve this problem, oranges must be properly prepped and packaged.
The steps to prepare oranges for freezing are as follows:
- Wash the oranges thoroughly to remove dirt, bacteria, and pesticide residue. Dry them to prevent ice crystals from forming, which can lead to freezer burn.
- If using the oranges in a recipe or as a juice, peeling and segmenting them is best. Be sure the packaging is securely closed to prevent freezer burn and oxidation,
- Juicing is another way to preserve the benefits of freezing oranges. Juice the oranges and store them in containers.
Methods of freezing oranges:
- Flash Freezing: To flash-freeze, lay orange segments on a baking sheet in a single layer and place in the freezer until frozen. When frozen, the segments can be stored in airtight containers or bags.
- ICE CUBE TRAYS: To preserve small quantities, ice cube trays are ideal. Pour orange juice into trays and freeze. Add the cubes to desserts, smoothies, or add to drinks.
- Vacuum seal: Vacuum sealing is the best method because it removes all air. It also eliminates freezer burn and maintains the quality of the orange.
Storing frozen oranges at the proper temperature is essential to maintaining their quality. Frozen oranges should be stored in airtight containers or freezer bags at 0℉ or -18℃ or below. Thaw segments in the refrigerator to prevent bacterial growth. Orange juice may be thawed at room temperature, or frozen cubes can be used in recipes or drinks.
The benefits of freezing oranges include preserving vitamins and nutrients and keeping them available throughout the year. The convenience of having them available for recipes and buying them in bulk during their peak season is economic.
A few precautions should be taken when using frozen oranges. Be aware that frozen and thawed oranges may exhibit texture changes, which may affect their use in specific recipes. Freezer burn can occur, leading to a loss in flavor and nutritional value if they are not adequately packaged. Always check for signs of spoilage, such as smells, slimy texture, and mold growth.
Oranges are in season now! Stock up on this delicious, juicy fruit to maintain its health benefits all year long.
Until next time,
Peace Love and Blessings❤️
