Those of you who have followed me since the inception of my blog in mid January, may recall my second post on the benefits of warm lemon water. Lemon water alone is very healthy but by adding the superfood chia seeds you can really increase those healthy benefits.
The lemon is about 2,500 years old and is the result of crossbreeding between a lime and a citron, Chia seeds are also an ancient superfood. Unlike flaxseeds and various other nutritious seeds, they do not have to ground before you use them.
Today we are going to look at some reasons warm lemon water with chia seeds should be a part of your daily diet.
- Lemons are high in antioxidants
Lemons are loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These include vitamin C, calcium, potassium, magnesium, citric acid, pectin, limonene, and bioflavonoids. All of these work together to supercharge the immune system and keep our bodies functioning at their best.
Lemons have also been found to possess antibacterial and antiviral properties. In today’s world of covid19, this is significant. Drinking warm lemon water with chia seeds may help you recover faster, if you have a cold or flu.
- Lemon water is great for detoxification
Lemons have long been a staple in healthy, natural detoxification of the body. Adding warm lemon water to a diet of whole, unprocessed foods can do wonders.
Fresh lemon juice is similar to your saliva and digestive juices, and can break down foods and other material efficiently. Adding rich in fiber chia seeds, can help ease a variety of digestive disturbances, like bloating and indigestion.
Lemon water is also a mild diuretic and helps to cleanse the urinary tract of bacteria. As well it stimulates the liver to produce bile. Your liver is your body’s main detoxification organ. It is essential to keep it functioning optimally.
- Lemons may help you to lose weight
Adding lemons to a balanced diet of whole foods, including plenty of fruits, vegetables, healthy proteins and fats may help you lose weight. The polyphenols of lemons suppress the development of fat pad accumulation, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, and insulin resistance.
- Lemons can balance your body’s pH
The taste of lemons is acidic, however they actually are alkalizing within the body. Due to the high mineral content found in lemons, they help to alkalize the blood. Because of unhealthy diets and/or poor lifestyles, many people’s pH is too acidic.
Balancing the body’s pH can help lower inflammation and draw uric acid from the joints. This may relieve certain cases of chronic joint pain.
- Lemons may help you to look and feel younger
Due to their high antioxidant, vitamin, and mineral content, lemons can help you to feel your best. They provide a boost of energy and can help you stay focused.
The vitamin C found in lemons is important to your skin. It is key in the body’s production of collagen and helps fight wrinkle-triggering free radicals. All of this gives you healthier, more radiant skin.
I have been drinking warm lemon water for years. Perhaps that practice and the fact that “Black don’t crack”, contribute to my youthful appearance and smooth glowing skin.
- Chia seeds are high in vital nutrients
Like lemons, chia seeds are full of nutrients. They are high in fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, protein, calcium, iron, and magnesium. They also contain vitamins B1 and B3, which are essential to a properly functioning nervous system. Chia seeds as well are full of antioxidants.
- Chia seeds are a wealth of omega-3s
Omega-3 fatty acids have been linked to cardiovascular protection, lowering inflammation, and boosting cognitive function. These essential fatty acids, which are derived from food sources, have also been associated with lowering insulin resistance, and relieving depression.
- Chia seeds may halt cancer growth
Chia seeds may help slow the growth of certain cancers. A study published in 2007 in the journal Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes, and Essential Fatty Acids, tested the effects of various polyunsaturated acids, including chia seed oil.
The results revealed that the chia seed oil, ” decreased the tumor weight and metastasis number” of the cancer.
I have recently started adding chia seeds to my warm lemon water, which I drink several times a day. It is very easy to make. Start with warm water, squeeze in the juice of half a lemon, and add two tablespoons of chia seeds. The chia seeds will form a gel-like consistency in your glass and are easy to sip.
So…… what are you waiting for? Add chia seeds to your warm lemon water and start sipping!
