Raw apple cider vinegar has been known to have some benefits for many health conditions; however, did you know it has side effects and risks? Apple cider vinegar contains 5% to 6% acetic acid which kills harmful bacteria. Good bacteria, natural probiotics which can improve your immune system and gut health. The third component in raw ACV is antioxidants which prevent damage to the cells in your body. You can find pasteurized and raw apple cider vinegar in grocery stores; most people choose raw for health purposes.

There are certain groups of people who should use apple cider vinegar cautiously, pregnant and breastfeeding women are one of them. There is not enough evidence to say it is safe during these conditions. People with diabetes, especially insulin dependent should monitor blood sugars closely as vinegar can possibly lower blood sugars.

Apple cider vinegar can lead to difficulty in swallowing if it isn’t diluted enough. Apple cider vinegar also lowers potassium which can cause disruption in the beat of the heart, muscle weakness or breakdown, constipation, fatigue, or paralysis. If you take medications that lower potassium, do not take ACV, without talking to your medical provider. As well do not take ACV if you are on blood thinners without consulting your doctor.

ACV has been used to detox the body, common side effects experienced are diarrhea, indigestion, and heartburn. Unrefined ACV with a Ph level of 5-7 prevents these side effects. If the side effects continue, lower your dose of ACV, or stop using it. The high acidity of ACV undiluted can destroy tooth enamel. It leaves a yellowish tint to your teeth and increases sensitivity of your teeth. Drink ACV through a straw to prevent direct contact with your teeth or mix it with water or juice to lower possible side effects. Brushing your teeth after drinking ACV will also help protect your tooth enamel.

The big question some of you may ask is “What about weight loss?” Apple cider vinegar may not cause significant weight loss; however, it has certain properties that may help. The pectin, (a soluble fiber) in apple cider vinegar, helps you feel full longer. ACV also slows down the emptying of the gastric system, which also makes you feel fuller which prevents overeating.
