This is part one of a two part series about the benefits of egg shells. This week we will discuss the health benefits and next Monday we will discuss unique uses of egg shells.

Most of us think nothing about egg shells being anything but garbage, but hold on, eggs shells have remarkable health benefits. They are full of calcium. A medium sized egg shell has about 750-800 mgs of calcium plus magnesium, iron, manganese, sulphur, phosphorous, silicon, gelatin, collagen, and zinc. Believe it or not that’s only a few of them; egg shells also contain 27 microelements that your body readily absorbs.

They are possibly the best form of calcium and easy for your body to digest and absorb. Egg shells have been used in the treatment of arthritis and joint pain. The composition of egg shells is similar to that of bones and teeth.

It is always best to use eggs from chickens that have been pastured, second best are ones that have been fed organic soy-free feed.

Alleviate Joint Pain

Key elements like collagen and chondroitin found in egg shells work wonders for joint pain.

  • Take 1 egg shell and break it into small pieces
  • Place in a glass jar
  • Add two glasses of apple cider vinegar to the jar and tightly close it
  • Wait about 2 days so the egg shell pieces melt into the vinegar
  • Then take 2 tablespoons of this solution and gently massage the affected sites
  • Repeat 2-3 times daily and you will soon experience relief
  • The solution in the glass jar will remain intact for several months

Improve Complexion with Egg Shell Mask

Instead of spending lots of money for regular cosmetics to improve your complexion, try this egg shell mask. All that calcium contained in egg shells and the collagen will give your skin a great boost!

  • Take 2 egg shells and 1 egg white, combine them, mixing well
  • Spread the mixture on your face and allow to dry fully
  • Wash your face with lukewarm water
  • Repeat regularly for radiant skin

Egg Shell Powder for General Health

With all the great nutrients egg shells contain, it is a great health tonic

  • Take five egg shells and 1 bowl of water enough to cover the egg shells
  • Boil the water for 5 minutes
  • Bake the boiled egg shells in a 200 degree F oven for about 20 minutes or until they become crispy
  • Remove them from the oven and grind into a fine powder, a coffee grinder works best if you have one
  • Add 1/2 tsp of the powder to smoothies, applesauce, oats, etc.

Lets Make Some Toothpaste

Yep! You can even make toothpaste from egg shells. Thanks to all the minerals found in the shells, they contribute tremendously to your dental health.

  • Take 10 egg shells, place in a bowl of water, to cover them and boil fully for 5 minutes
  • Remove the shells from the water and dry them for a few hours
  • Grind them into a fine powder
  • Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in the powder
  • Mix to desired consistency
  • Store in a glass jar and use daily like regular toothpaste

You may alter the flavor using essential oils like peppermint, cinnamon, rosemary, etc.

Blend of Egg Shell Powder and Lemon

Those of you who have been following my blog for awhile may recall the blog about the health benefits of lemon. If you have not read it scroll back to do so. Lemons are powerful when it comes to your health. So lets put two power houses together to improve your general health.

  • Take 2 egg shells and 1 lemon
  • Grind the egg shells into a fine powder
  • Extract the juice of the lemon and mix with the powder in a bowl
  • Mix well and you will notice bubbles
  • Allow the mixture to sit 6 hours undisturbed at room temperature
  • Then consume 1 tablespoon of the mixture at each meal
  • Repeat daily at every meal of the day

Egg Shells to Clean Your Blood

Egg shells play a role in cleaning your blood. The calcium and other minerals they contain act to purify your blood.

  • Crush 5 egg shells into small pieces and place in two bowls of water
  • Refrigerate the water for 1 week
  • Then start to drink the water just like your normal drinking water
  • Make sure you drink at least 3 glasses daily

Egg Shells for the Health of Your Thyroid Gland

The numerous health properties of egg shells include the ability to improve the health of your thyroid gland. Rakia, mentioned in the recipe below is an aperitif popular in Turkey and Balkan Countries. It is the national drink of turkey and also known as Lion’s Milk. It is made of twice distilled grapes and aniseed.

  • Take 10 egg shells and break into tiny pieces
  • Squeeze the juice from 3 lemons and pour over the egg shells
  • Store this mixture in the fridge for 7 days
  • Remove the mixture from the fridge and strain it
  • Add 1/2 bowl of rakia and 1/2 bowl of honey to the mixture
  • Leave the mixture undisturbed for 1 week at room temperature
  • Take 1 teaspoon daily after every meal

Egg Shells Cure Gastric Ulcers

Yes, I didn’t stutter, I said cure gastric ulcers. You can safely depend on the vital nutrients in egg shells to cure gastric ulcers. They have been known as the best natural remedy to cure gastric ulcers in many cultures. Because it is a natural remedy, there are no side effects. If you suffer from gastric ulcers take heed!

  • Crush 5 egg shells into pieces and add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • Wait for the shells to become soft and mix in 2 cups of hot milk
  • Take 1 teaspoon of this mixture as soon as you wake up in the morning before you consume anything else
  • Take another teaspoon at bedtime
  • Repeat daily to get rid of gastric ulcers

There you have the “tea” about the health benefits of egg shells, something you have been treating like garbage. Who knew? Now that you have been enlightened use this information to boost your overall health.
