When I was growing up we would take our wagon and scour the neighborhood for pop bottles which were worth 2 cents. After gathering a sufficient amount to buy candy we would head to the neighborhood store and look up and down the candy aisle trying to make a decision. At that time we had penny candy and chocolate bars were 5 cent. My favorite was Almond Joy. Delicious coconut covered with dark chocolate.

Chocolate has earned a bad name due to the unhealthy way it is processed. Without a doubt the candy bars at the check out line are not good for you. However organic raw dark chocolate, known as a superfood has many health benefits. I purchase dark chocolate bars, freeze them and break off a square or two for a late night snack.

Cacao which is the raw form of chocolate was known as the food of the gods, in Ancient Mayan culture. They grew cacao trees in their gardens. The processing of cacao produces the chocolate of today which loses its health benefits in the method used.

Organic raw chocolate is filled with essential vitamins and minerals, and antioxidants. Some of which are magnesium, sulfur, zinc, iron, copper, potassium, manganese, and calcium.

It is a good source of protein and fiber, and contains vitamins B1,B2,B3,B5,B8,and E. there are eight times the number of antioxidants in cacao beans than there are in strawberries.

I recall as a teenager always being told chocolate would break out your skin. Yet again another myth. Dark chocolate is actually good for your skin. In actuality it even protects your skin from the damage of ultraviolet rays from the sun.

Flavonoids found in dark chocolate help promote a healthy heart and elevates your mood. They improve circulation, lower blood pressure, and reduce plaque build up on artery walls.

The healthy fats found in dark chocolate, including oleic acid, a monosaturated fat found in olive and coconut oils. The body needs these to function properly.

An alkaloid found in cacao , theobromine,, stimulates the nervous system and provides a boost of energy to the body. Cacao also contains phenylethylamine (PEA), which affects brain chemistry in a similar way as falling in love. Perhaps that is how chocolate became associated with Valentine’s Day.

In order to get the most benefit from chocolate choose raw, non- roasted cacao beans. Also try cacao powder ( not cocoa powder). Because of its initial bitter taste, use raw dark chocolate when making a savory dish. Combine it with coconut crystals, or crushed stevia leaves for sweeter recipes. Visit your local health food store for options.

If you are going to eat chocolate, get the real McCoy and gain the health benefits while enjoying a treat.

Peace and Blessings
